I thought this was basketball season, not football

Sod buzzard posted on this earlier in the week and this just emphasizes the point that was made.

Here’s why you gotta love West River ball vs East River ball.

Saturday afternoon District 10B Championship game final score

Mitchell Christian 21

Hanson 9

Apparently Hanson lead 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and were outscored 19-7 in the final three quarters.

How do two teams combine for only 30 points in an entire game? That’s just unbelievable. From the report I got, each team basically stood across half court and didn’t even try to run an offense. Why not? Isn’t that the whole point. You can’t even call it a defensive battle when that happens.

You would never see that happen in West River class B basketball. It’s all about scoring points out this way.

Can you imagine being at that game and how boring it must have been? How about the poor radio announcers who had to suffer through it and try to make it sound somewhat interesting. Even Bob Costas couldn’t do that.

I’m not in favor of a shot clock, but this was just the sort of thing that might convince the powers that be that one is needed. Too bad it’s games like this that will ruin it for everyone else.

How then does Mitchell Christian think they will be competitive in the next round? Do they think that their opponent isn’t going to try to score points? That strategy might work once, but when you get further into post-season play, teams will eat them up.

You can see the live blog rundown of the game by going here:

I understand stalling. I don’t understand stalling when you are down 7 in the 4th quarter, like Hanson did.

Sounds like a carbon copy of the Milbank/Sisseton game. We NEED a shot clock! If not? why not just play until someone scores the first basket and declare them the winner.

I totally agree with you guys. This is ridiculous. Play basketball! This isn’t even basketball as far as I am concerned. What a joke. I would be pretty upset if I were the kids and my coach told me to hold the ball the whole quarter. You play the whole season and for what? To hold the ball and score 21 points?

I responded to Sod’s comments on getting the scoreboard fired up. I like good defense in a game. But this sounds like it was a stall for four quarters!! Total difference….This is why EVERY year when the Mitchell area cries “we need to seed from 1-16″ that the rest of the state ignores their whining. What a boring game that must have been. Im not in favor or run and gun though Hole and you see a LOT of that out your way.

I beleive at this time of year you play to win so you can play again. Mitchell Christian did that. Hanson did not.

  6. Coach Says:

Shot clock keeps the game moving. Have the shot clock for the first 3 periods and shut it off for the 4th if teams with leads want to to stall. Stalling before 4th is not the answer.

I would have loved to be at this game.

  8. Iceman Says:

If you can’t go out and win by playing basketball, what’s the point? You should have confidence in your team to actually go out and play basketball and get the win that way. This is just a joke and is not fair to the kids.

Its called a game plan. A coaches job is to make the game plan that gives them the best chance to win. Please do not tell me that it is the lower seeds responsibility to lay down and let the other team win. Iceman, I’m not trying to be disrespectful, but your version of playing basketball is not everyone’s version. If controlling the ball and keeping the score low gives a team the best chance to win, then that is the plan that must be done. Until a shot clock is used, it is an effective game plan.

I admit I have used the stall technique in a game once, however it was a junior high game, played during a two-day tournament and we were playing back–to-back-to back to get into the championship game. However, we didn’t just cross the half court line and hold the ball. We actually ran our offense, moved around the floor, passed and dribbled the ball and made the other team play defense. If we had a wide-open layup, we took it. We ran our offense for close to 9 minutes (they were 20 minute running clock halfs) without a turnover and ended up winning the game.

But to deliberately plan on stalling for the entire game, in a high school game, just seems wrong to me.

How did these teams even make it to the district championship game by doing that? I think they have a shock coming to them the farther they get into the post-season.

GDH: It is not like these teams played the entire season this way!

    Some clarification.
Hanson held the ball for a couple of minutes at best in the first quarter to pull MCHS out of their zone while they had their lead. Hanson were very very patient on offense and MCHS ran their offense at normal pace when they had the ball in the first half. Hanson was playing the game to limit the number of possesions for the game. If they had hit a couple more open shots in the first half, they would have accomplished it.

Second half started out with MCHS getting the ball and the score 8-5. MCHS ran their offense for the first minute or less before they stood and waited to pull out Hanson from their zone defense. The players for either side stood for the remainder of time until around 30 seconds to go. MCHS ran their offense, missed a shot and Hanson lost the rebound out of bounds with around 2 seconds to go. MCHS scores and Hanson is down 10-5 with the ball to start 4th qtr. Hanson held the ball for around 4 minutes to start the fourth before running their offense. (This was the strange part of the game for me – being down 5pts and all)

I think Hanson’s game plan to lessen the number of possesions was plausable but didn’t work even though they had multiple opportunities to make some open shots early in the game.

That being said – Mitchell Christian will make state and be playing in the night bracket. Tolsma is the best Class B player in the state and the fortunes of his teammates will ride with him.

Shot Clock, Shot Clock, Shot Clock.

It’s called controlling game tempo. I see nothing wrong with it.
