Of course the chill in the morning air can only mean one thing………FOOTBALL SEASON! I am really looking forward to this season! I think there are some good teams in the LMC, but right out of the gate, I see the Ranchers taking home the conference title…AGAIN!!!
The Ranchers graduated a lot of seniors, but the core of their talent is back and I would imagine they are pretty hungry after last year’s heartbreaking loss in the playoffs.
I look forward to covering the LMC again!!
Okay, so I finally finished up my work for 2009, turned over my calendar and found it was January 19!!! WOW. So sorry for missing the boat for the last 2 1/2 weeks.
2009 finished up well for a few teams in the LMC. The Ranchers were 5-0, while Faith and McIntosh didn’t fair so bad either. The Ranchers then travelled to Faith and lost. You never can tell what will happen during those first few games after the Christmas break. However, I think that matchup will be a good one all year – meaning, I think they will meet again!!
I got a chance to watch the Ranchers play last night against a good team from Bowman, ND. Bowman jumped out early with one of their players scoring double digits in the first quarter. The Ranchers then settled down and ended up losing a close one by free throws at the end. This was the first game I saw the Ranchers play this year where they were able to set up some offensive plays and run them through. The other few games I watched were mainly running up the court and scoring on fast break lay ups. This wins games, but not all of them.
The Ranchers have some VERY TALENTED underclassmen that see a lot of the court. Last night, 2 juniors and a freshman started. Another freshman and a sophomore come off the bench very early. This should be a great year for them, as well as the future looking very bright.
Tonight, the Ranchers play McIntosh at home. This should be another good LMC matchup. Looking at common opponents, the Ranchers beat Scranton, ND twice this year, while Scranton downed McIntosh last week. The Ranchers may be tired after last night, but I think they will pull this one out.
OK! I’m guilty!! I fell into the lazy days of “between seasons” and haven’t quite got back up and running.
I will try to rectify that, although Christmas break will be a killer!
The LMC boys’ basketball season is underway and some teams have come out firing!
Bison, Lemmon, and Harding County all seem to be opening the season strong. I think that Harding County has been building for this for about the last two years. Bison should continue to show well, as their big guys are back. Faith and McIntosh aren’t being talked about a lot yet, but I think they will show as well.
Bison won very few games last year, and I look to see them improve that record, but I don’t see them finishing in the top three in the conference quite yet. Lemmon could be the dark horse; I’ll need a few more games to judge accurately!
During Christmas break, I will try to sort things out.
It seems as though the LMC teams didn’t fair so well in the 1st round. Nonetheless, we are very proud of them and congratulate them on their great seasons.
One team, however, will be playing their hearts out tonight in hopes of not seeing their season come to an end. The Harding County Ranchers will host the Sully Buttes Chargers this evening at 6pm MST in Buffalo. For those of you who don’t follow LMC football, or 9A football for that matter, THIS WILL BE A GAME!!
Both teams have some fabulous skill players and both teams have shown they are a force to be reckoned with this year. As far as stats go, I don’t think they tell the story and I don’t think they can be the deciding factor as far as who to pick to win this game.
In fact, I went down all of my usual “factors” which help me decide who to pick, and none of them helped this week. I think it comes down to who wants it more and MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, home field advantage plays a part. Since I report on the LMC, I am picking the Ranchers!!!!
For those of you who want to see a great football game, see you tonight in Buffalo.
First of all – CONGRATULATIONS! We have 4 teams representing the LMC in the 1st round of the playoffs.
Now, I will have to admit that Region 4 of 9B may be a little weak, but nonetheless – 4 teams!
Let’s start with 9B. We have Faith (6-2) hosting Warner (2-6). How can a 2-6 team make the playoffs????? They also have to travel a distance to play. I think I am going to go with Faith, if they don’t lose their cool and play to their potential.
Second 9B game has Dupree (4-4) travelling to New Underwood (4-4). Not a lot of miles to travel for the Tigers (those from Dupree), so that should not factor in. I think that New Underwood has played a tougher schedule this year and they should be able to get up for this game and beat Dupree.
Now to 9A. This is the game that I think was the hardest for me to pick. It has Harding County (8-0) hosting Colman-Egan (4-4). I think that it is fair to mention that the four losses Colman-Egan suffered came to teams that have stellar records: Estelline (8-0), Arlington (7-1), Dell Rapids St. Mary’s (7-1), and Deubrook (4-4 — not so stellar). The trip for Colman-Egan will be a long one. I think I calculated it to take about 7-8 hours and we know how wonderful those long bus trips can be. Colman-Egan will show up ready to play, but I think the Ranchers can pull this one out, as they have faced their share of tough opponents this year as well.
9AA, unfortunately is not much of a pick. Lyman (8-0) hosts Lemmon/McIntosh (7-1), but the game will go Lyman’s way and they should win no problem.
I hope no one wants me t
I usually do not like to fill my posts with sarcasm and narcissism, as I have never claimed to be the “know it all” of the football world.
HOWEVER, a few days ago, someone couldn’t wait for me to login on Friday morning and eat my words about picking Harding County over Lemmon.
Well…………MY WORDS HAVE NEVER TASTED SO GOOD!! I love being right!
Look for a later post once the SDHSAA sorts out the playoff picture.
It seems that everyone has had something to say about the Harding County/Philip game and the upcoming Lemmon/Harding County game.
I guess I will throw in my 2 cents for the end of the regular season in the LMC.
First of all, the picks as I see ‘em: Dupree over Bison; Faith over Timber Lake; and Newell over Edgemont.
Now, down to the Harding County versus Lemmon game for the Conference Championship. I am going to ride the coattails of the recent BCS standings that came out, claiming that strength of schedule has everything to do with picking a winner.
If you look at the season schedules of Lemmon and Harding County, it becomes a no-brainer to decide who has played the tougher opponents and who should come out with a victory tomorrow night. Therefore, I am picking Harding County over Lemmon.
Now, not to slight Lemmon. They have played a wonderful season and should be proud of themselves. After all, it is not their fault that they have to play the schedule they do. But, I don’t think they have really faced a team that will line up and hit like the Ranchers are known for.
Should be an interesting one tomorrow night in Buffalo, and I will be posting score updates for you on the homepage!
Playoffs are just around the corner too, so I will be attempting to sort through all that after the SDHSAA sorts through all that on Friday morning!
Sorry to post so late – flu has hit our house!
I see lots of comments on the Lemmon/Newell game. Interesting, but I think Lemmon comes out on top.
As for the rest…..Harding County over Dupree, Faith over Edgemont and Timber Lake over McLaughlin.
Hopefully I will see you sooner next week, and without the germs surrounding me!
I checked on the comment about Timber Lake winning the 2007 LMC championship and actually it was SHARED between Timber Lake and Harding County, as TL beat HC, Faith beat TL, and HC beat Faith!
Well, here we go. After a week where I focused my post on the Ranchers, they have their toughest opponent, so far, this year.
Picks for the week will be: Bison over Timber Lake; Newell over Dupree; Lemmon over Faith; Harding County over Wall.
See you all next week!
